The highly anticipated eco-friendly 90-villa Hurawalhi Island Resort, the Maldives opened its doors in December 2016 and is the newest romantic, luxurious sanctuary for adults. On approach during a 40-minute scenic seaplane flight from Male, a collection of villas can be seen on the lagoon, comprising 60 overwater Ocean Villas and 30 Beach Villas. The spacious villas (105 and 132 square metres) are designed as the epitome of tropical chic with clean lines, earthy tones and natural materials which harmonise with the lush vegetation of this unspoiled island. Soothing décor, sumptuous linens on king-size beds, bleached wooden floors and private terraces with panoramic views provide a serene sanctuary for those seeking luxury and innovation. Villas are equipped with the latest technology including broadband Internet connection, Bluetooth sound bar, 121-centimetre flat-screen TV.
Exquisite dining options including world’s largest undersea restaurant and candlelight dinners on the beach
Dining options include the scene-stealing ‘5.8’ undersea restaurant in a setting submerged 5.8 metres under the sea. Surrounded by out-of-this-world marine life and views, the minimalist restaurant design keeps the focus on the outside and rates high on romance, with every table being set for two. The multi-course tasting menu concept is available with wine-pairing options recommended by the sommelier.
Coming up for air above the water, the Aquarium Restaurant offers sea views by day and a romantic candlelit ambience by night. Serving a contemporary menu with carefully sourced organic and artisanal ingredients and a Teppanyaki grill, there is a strong emphasis on fresh local seafood and the finest quality prime beef with sushi, sashimi and tempura.
Overlooking the tranquil Indian Ocean, Canneli is where guests are treated to the resort’s sumptuous breakfasts. It is the third option for evening dining, serving international cuisine prepared to the highest standards. Private Beach Dining al fresco under the stars allows guests to create once-in-a-lifetime memories in a romantic setting, while enjoying signature lobster and wagyu beef cooked to order by a personal chef.
At the end of the Ocean Villa jetty, the Champagne Pavilion is the perfect romantic spot to celebrate romance with a Champagne toast and canapés. The Coco Bar on the beach has an al fresco deck overlooking the lagoon and is perfect for enjoying sunset or after-dinner cocktails. The overwater Aquarium Bar adds a third option and variety. Hurawalhi Island Resort’s Duniye Spa brings visitors closer to nature overlooking the water. Duniye means “universe” and the name represents its philosophy: a universal approach to wellness, with treatments inspired by ancient and modern expertise from around the globe. A strong influence from the healing traditions of Asia and Africa are reflected in the Spa’s offerings. Channelling wholeness, simplicity, purity and quality, the Spa uses only chemical-free organic compound products from Healing Earth™, which are free from petrochemicals, synthetics, colourants, DEA, preservatives and parabens.
Environmental responsibility and commitment
With a strong environmental focus, Hurawalhi Island Resort is committed to giving back and protecting its pristine environment. Using solar panels to generate 60% of its power, its own water bottling plant (hence no plastic bottles are used), energy-saving solutions, hot water recovery and its own Marine Biology Centre with an inhouse Marine Biologist, Hurawalhi Island Resort’s eco-credentials are second to none.
In addition, Hurawalhi Island Resort is collaborating with Manta Trust to provide educational guided dives and snorkelling in the spectacular reefs and shipwrecks nearby. The island is a nesting site for green turtles and a breeding ground for manta rays. Manta Trust is tasked with preserving this natural habitat as well as educating visitors on these beautiful and endangered creatures.
For activity-seekers there is tennis, badminton and beach volleyball, and a sports fishing boat for deep-sea fishing excursions. Guided diving and snorkelling boat trips are available, as well as a complete PADI 5* training centre. A plethora of water sports activities include jet skis, paragliding, water skiing, wake-boarding, paddle boarding, windsurfing, kayaks and catamarans.
After clearing Immigration and Customs, guests are greeted by the resort’s Airport staff and are escorted to check-in at the TMA seaplane ticket counter, after which they are transported to the TMA Terminal in a private hotel vehicle. A refreshing cold face towel, warm hospitality, beverage and snacks are offered with free Wi-Fi while waiting for the seaplane to depart. The Lounge remains open in the late afternoon and evening so guests can relax in comfort until their check-in time for their flight home at the international departure terminal. Private transfers are provided to the international departure terminal. The arrival service is provided free of charge and a nominal fee of US$25 per person is applicable for the departure service.
