No.1 Waitanyuan has now been fully managed and operated by The Peninsula Shanghai from 1 April 2017, diversifying its portfolio of services, facilities and event spaces in one of Shanghai’s most iconic period buildings.

No.1 Waitanyuan, which is also known as the Former British Consulate building, is one edifice in the sprawling complex of historical Waitanyuan treasures. Waitanyuan, meaning “Source of The Bund” in Mandarin, is a historical complex located at the northernmost tip of the Bund, Shanghai’s riverside embankment, characterised by period architecture and views of the Pudong business district.

No.1 Waitanyuan is a testament to the history of Shanghai, a reminder of a once-bustling commercial port at the centre of art, culture, trade and commerce. With a blend of European architectural styles, Waitanyuan is a stunning example of concession-era Shanghai and includes the former British Consulate Building (1849), the former Consul’s Residence (1882), the former Union Church (1886), former Church Apartments (1899) and the Former Shanghai Rowing Club (1905).

The former British Consulate, No.1 Waitanyuan, the centrepiece of the complex and oldest edifice on the Bund, was listed under Outstanding Modern Architecture in 1994 and a Key Cultural Relic under State Protection in 1995. Painstakingly restored, the complex offers not only a distinguished historical atmosphere, but commands stunning views of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, with dramatic Art Deco facades, modern skyscrapers and the Garden Bridge (built in 1908) all within one perfect vista.

The Former British Consulate building itself offers 12 restored function rooms, each with its own character and architectural style, spread over 3242sqm and two storeys, all set among the original consulate gardens. Hosting countless milestone events by world’s top brands, No.1 Waitanyuan serves a leading event space in the Bund area. Utilised for private banquets and wedding parties, the building offers the perfect setting for special occasions as well as corporate events. No.1 Waitanyuan also offers a restaurant menu for lunch and dinner, and special afternoon tea sets set among opulent interiors of the Garden, Cigar and Music rooms. The addition of No.1 Waitanyuan to The Peninsula Shanghai administration offers unrivalled new spaces to diversify the hotel’s existing range of services and facilities. The portfolio of new venues will be suitable for parties, exhibitions, concerts and private dinners, while the complex presents wonderful opportunities for hosting larger events such as festivals, fairs and expositions.

The Bund area is home to a diverse selection of attractions and facilities such as the Rockbund Art Museum and a variety of independent galleries, luxury stores, river cruises and reputable restaurants and bars. Conveniently located, The Peninsula Shanghai and No.1 Waitanyuan link to both Pudong and Hongqiao International airports within just one hour, and the International Cruise Terminal within just 10 minutes.
