Family tourist attraction, Madame Tussauds, Sydney, has been awarded gold at the highly coveted Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in the category of New Tourism Development. Set within 1800 square metres in Darling Harbour and at a total cost of $14 million, Madame Tussauds Sydney opened its doors to the public in April 2012 as the thirteenth of its kind in the world.
The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards recognises excellence across a broad range of categories and is considered to be the Australian tourism industry’s premier awards program. The awards ceremony was held last Friday night at The Princes Wharf i
n Hobart, with tourism operators from around the country flying in for the glittering awards ceremony.
Hywel Mathias, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Sydney was thrilled and said; “Sydney was selected as the location of the thirteenth Madame Tussauds in the world because of the global nature of the city and the volume of tourists and the Darling Harbour location. To be recognised as the best new tourism development for 2012 is a real honour, and this coupled with the attraction’s popularity with domestic and international tourists alike really drives home the fact that Madame Tussauds is now right at home here in Sydney.
Myself and the whole Madame Tussauds team are overjoyed at this prestigious win. Bringing such an iconic international brand to Sydney, and ensuring we tailor it to be a uniquely Australian experience has been a great challenge and a lot of fun. Since we opened the attraction last year we have worked hard to ensure all our guests get to meet and interact with the people they really want to meet and it certainly feels like that hard work has paid off. I would also like to pay due credit to the other attractions recognised in our competitive category”.
The attraction gives Australians and international visitors the opportunity to come face-to-face with some of the world’s most famous celebrities via a collection of amazing life-like wax figures in a unique, interactive setting.
