Until recently, the lack of stylish hotels kept Salcombe exclusive to home owners and their lucky guests. In 2010, the opening of the South Sands Hotel, hailed the start of a major revolution in this coastal town introducing affordable luxury for discerning families.
This summer, South Sands Hotel has teamed up with Bang Wallop photography to offer young residents the chance to attend an I-Spy children’s photography course for £25. Aimed at children aged seven to 12 years, the course is a three-hour introduction to photography, allowing the children to create and produce their own images.
The hotel’s five spacious two-bedroom Beach Suites offer self-catering accommodation for up to six guests and are priced from £320 per night including breakfast.
Alongside the photography courses available at Bang Wallop, the hotel has a superb selection of fun-filled activities on the beach and in the surrounding area. South Sands’ very own activities and events coordinator is on hand to help families organise a vast selection of local activities, including sand castle competitions, sailing, hot air balloon riding and horse riding along the beach. South Sands Sailing School is based right on the beach in a former lifeboat house next to the hotel, renting Kayaks, Stand-Up Paddleboards and Topper Topaz sailing boats. Sea Kayaks are a particularly fun way to explore the spectacular coastline. Nearby East Portlemouth beach is made up of a small collection of quiet, smaller coves, offering private pockets of Devonshire coastline to explore. All beaches in the area have won ‘Safe Bathing’ status, meaning that parents can relax and allow their little ones to roam free and paddle in the clean, safe shallow waters. Crabbing is a must-do activity in Salcombe, with the town’s quay famed for its spots from which to dangle fishing lines and have competitions to see who can catch the most.
