&Beyond is giving its Mozambican island retreat, &Beyond Benguerra Island a brand new look. As part of its extensive investment plan, the lodge is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment, which will see it become arguably Benguerra’s premier luxury lodge. With an elegant new interior design that reflects Mozambique’s Portuguese heritage, the lodge will reopen on 1 June 2015.
A new and welcoming entrance will ensure that guests arriving at the lodge will be immediately enveloped in the warm local hospitality that &Beyond is renowned for. Down on the beach, the Dhow Bar, a Benguerra icon, will receive a makeover that focuses on both comfort and style. Much more than just a bar, this area will be a space to relax or enjoy delicious meals on the beach throughout the day. The lodge’s refurbished rim-flow swimming pool is also situated nearby and is surrounded by cleverly created patches of shade.
Boasting a light and airy colour scheme with a dash of bright island style, the lodge’s casinhas and cabanas will combine tropical chic with a distinct nod to both Africa and the Mozambican coastline’s Portuguese heritage. Both types of accommodation are being extensively revamped, while the cabanas are also being widened and beds repositioned to face the ocean views.
All bedrooms will feature new furnishings, complete with elegant four-poster beds topped with white linen mosquito net canopies and comfortable day beds. Elegant tiled floors are being installed, while overhead fans and air conditioning will ensure that guests can enjoy a cool refuge from the African sun.
Revamped beach bandas will feature comfortable new furniture ideal for lounging within sight of the ocean.
In line with &Beyond’s commitment to sustainable luxury, the electricity, water and sewage systems at the lodge have all received an overhaul to use the latest technology.
Benguerra will continue to offer its famous beach horse rides, with a few new additions to the stables to cater for more heavy-set riders.
Since &Beyond took over the management of &Beyond Benguerra Island in November 2013, the company has worked with the local community to identify the top priority projects on the island. Working with their community development partner, Africa Foundation, and engaging with island elders, &Beyond has committed to the building of a multi-purpose centre to serve as a focal point for local initiatives. The centre will also function as a place of safety, as well as a centre for health education. &Beyond and Africa Foundation have retained the services of the same company that is working on the lodge refurbishments and construction is expected to begin as soon as work on the lodge is completed.
