On Foot Holidays has released a brand new tour for 2016 which will take experienced walkers through Bulgaria’s spectacular mountain ranges.

The tour will see an experienced guide take hikers through the Rila Mountains, through picturesque Bulgarian wilderness and up the highest peak in the Balkans, Mt Musala, which is 2925m above sea level. A highlight of the tour will be a 1500m descent through meadows and oak woodlands to the World Heritage Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural and historical monuments. Founded in the 10th century, the still-functioning monastery features an ornate church, museums and impressive examples of artwork and architecture.

The new guided tour is for private groups of between four and six family members or friends.

In addition to staying in local hotels, a memorable night will be spent in a traditional mountain refuge, where walkers will enjoy an archetypal mountain experience – complete with mountain food and late night singsongs.

The route through Bulgaria’s remote wilderness and impressive mountains will begin at Govedarzi in the foothills of the Rila Mountains, and finish at the Rila Monastery. Transfers from Sofia airport are included.

The package includes daily breakfasts, five evening meals, five picnics, six nights’ accommodation and all luggage transfers, meaning walkers simply carry a day pack. The walk is classified as hard, with five to 7½ hours spent hiking each day. It is available from July to September.

The walk can be taken in 2016 for £545 per person, twin-share (approx $A1162 depending on exchange rates).
