A ship named after the midnight sun will take Australians to the top of Norway in the northern summer this year as part of an exclusive, new 15-night rail and cruise tour offered by Cruise Express.

Hurtigruten’s 1000-passenger ms Midnatsol – Norwegian for midnight sun – will journey north from Bergen to North Cape and beyond to the Russian border. During the voyage this August – just two months after the summer solstice – the ship will sail into the world’s most spectacular fjords, with almost 24-hour daylight lighting the way.

The ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ tour from Cruise Express begins on 21 August 2016, when travellers fly to Norway’s capital, Oslo, for a two-night stay, with a city tour that includes the Viking Ship Museum.

Guests then ride Norway’s trains to the country’s famed fjord country for stays in Voss and Bergen and a ride on the panoramic Flam Railway. Billed as one of the world’s most beautiful and steepest train rides, the Flam train climbs from sea level to 863m-high mountain tops in just one hour, with the scenery including waterfalls, wild rivers, vast forests and 20 tunnels. A breathtaking cruise on a rugged fjord near Voss is also included.

After a walking tour of historic Bergen, ringed by fjords and mountains, the tour moves to sea for a six-night voyage north aboardms Midnatsol which also provides a regular passenger, freight, mail and car service for isolated Norwegian towns.

The cruise ends at the remote town of Kirkenes near the Russian border and beyond North Cape, where 16 hours of daylight is experienced in late August, with twilight lasting all night. After a visit to local huskies and reindeer, guests fly back to Oslo for a final night’s stay before the flight back to Australia.

Including return flights from Australia, the domestic flight in Norway, seven nights’ accommodation, the six-night cruise and rail trips, the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ cruise tour is available from $8990 per person, twin-share, or from $10,990 for solo travellers.
