Three new Mexican properties join SLH

This month, Small Luxury Hotels of the World has welcomed three new properties in Mexico to its portfolio of boutique luxury hotels. The hotels join alongside seven other SLH properties in Mexico.

Stara Hamburgo, Mexico City, Mexico

Rooms from USD $210 per night based on two sharing

Newly opened in January 2016, this boutique property is an historic 19th-century Spanish mansion on the outside with a contemporary hotel on the inside. Bold, modern furnishings catch the eye in the 60 rooms and suites, and intelligent features such as acoustic screens will help ensure guests sleep soundly. Many rooms offer a private balcony with views of the city or garden. The colourful Roof Garden Restaurant, which serves inventive international and Mexican cuisine, also offers a panoramic view of the buzzing city streets. The hotel is home to two other restaurants, Luna Bistro and Five S, which serve local organic produce for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Located between the bohemian Zona Rosa and the sleek Zona Financiera in Mexico City, Stara Hamburgo is a great springboard for guests to explore the many grand cathedrals and Aztec ruins the capital is home to.

SLH Insider Tip: Bookworms will fall in love with Cafebrería El Pendulo – a 15-minute drive from the hotel. This pretty bookshop-cum-café/restaurant also hosts regular live music nights.

Stara San Angel Inn, Mexico City, Mexico

Rooms from USD $160 per night based on two sharing

Guests at this ultra-modern all-suite hotel can experience the feel of staying in their own luxury apartment whilst being able to take advantage of the services the hotel offers. Each of the 22 suites comes with a modern kitchen, designer bathroom filled with L’Occitane products, plus its own private terrace with views of the quirky vertical garden or San Angel city. Both restaurants at the hotel serve international and Mexican cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the Roof Garden also has the added bonus of some of the best views in San Angel. This artistic neighbourhood is filled with cultural landmarks on the doorstep, including the picturesque Coyoacan neighbourhood, Studio Diego Rivera and Plaza San Jacinto. For guests looking to be pampered in between sightseeing, the hotel can arrange in-room spa treatments and access to its 24-hour gym.

SLH Insider Tip: If you’re there on a Saturday, visit San Angel’s weekend bazaar, a great place to pick up work from local up and coming artists and soak up the atmosphere.

Chablé Spa & Resort, Yucatan, Mexico

Rooms from USD $1040 per night based on two sharing

In a unique setting in the heart of the Mayan forest, Chablé Spa & Resort is spread across 300 hectares on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The resort opens its doors in November 2016, featuring 38 stand-alone pool villas with outdoor showers, hammocks, and large outdoor living rooms. The spa is the centre piece of the hacienda, built beside ‘cenote’ natural case formations unique to the Yucatan and considered sacred by the Mayans. The spa features nine treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna and floatarium. The hotel’s two restaurants serve organic, seasonal cuisine sourced directly from the on-site gardens. The wine cellar is home to exclusive vintages and provides an intimate setting for romantic dinners. The resort also features an expansive cellar showcasing the largest private tequila collection in the world.

SLH insider tip: Spa guests interested in learning about and preparing their own aromatherapy can do so in the spa’s garden kitchen.
