Mexico’s Caribbean coast ups its game with chic beachside bolthole, Hotel Esencia

Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess on what is considered the most beautiful stretch of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Hotel Esencia is today one of the finest luxury boutique properties on the Riviera Maya. In 2005 it was converted into a hotel and in 2014 began a new journey when award-winning entrepreneur and art collector Kevin Wendle became owner.

Since taking over, Wendle completed a major refurbishment programme in 2015, enhancing the hotel’s facilities by refreshing all 29 bedrooms and suites, and introducing a one-off collection of art and antiques, including traditional mid-century furnishings and authentic 1950s artworks.

Hotel Esencia’s stylish bedrooms and suites are equipped with complimentary mini-bar, Mastro Raphaël Italian bed linen and a curated collection of art and design books. As part of the refurbishment, Hotel Esencia also introduced its own range of bathroom amenities, created in partnership with Ahal, a local Mexican brand that specialises in natural and eco-sensitive products. Each room and suite boasts a private terrace and seating area with views of either the luxuriant gardens or the Caribbean Sea.

Hotel Esencia’s four signature suites located within the main hotel – the Garden Room, Garden Suite, Ocean Suite and Master Suite – offer superb privacy and modern living. The two-bedroom, two-storey Pool Villa is ideal for families and benefits from multiple terraces, a media room with a 52-inch HD TV, and a courtyard furnished with hammocks and a full-length heated swimming pool.

Following its renovation, Hotel Esencia is home to a handpicked collection of art and antiques. With Wendle’s desire to reimagine the property came an entire collection of furniture designed specially for the hotel in addition to handwoven rugs, bed throws and table tops which pay homage to mid-century Mexican and European art and design. Artwork by celebrated Spanish and Latin American artists decorate the walls including works by Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero and Eduardo Santiere. There are Pierre Jeanneret chairs in the main sitting room along with lamps by Serge Mouille and Pierre Guariche. Public spaces are subtly filled with a music playlist conceived by Paris-based DJ Michel Gaubert and website illustrated by whimsical Pierre Le-Tan animations.

Hotel Esencia is home to two outdoor restaurants as well as a beach bar, poolside grill and cold-pressed juice bar. Situated between the two main pools and the beach, The Pool Restaurant places emphasis on seasonal ingredients and seafood while The Garden Restaurant offers a sophisticated take on Mexican dishes.

The two large pools offer guests the perfect opportunity to cool off and unwind on the sun loungers surrounded by lush foliage. At the end of the gardens is Hotel Esencia’s health club located under a thatched palapa overlooking the cenote, fully equipped with Technogym facilities, a Pilates reformer and private trainers. Those who wish to sit back and relax can take advantage of sunrise yoga on Hotel Esencia’s secluded beach.

The organic spa creates restorative programmes using pure ingredients harvested from the waters of the Caribbean and soil from the Mayan jungle. Aroma Spa offers a selection of body and healing treatments for both adults and children including massages, skin renewal, reflexology and Reiki.

October 2017 will see the launch of 11 new suites – six Beach Suites and five Jungle Suites – and a new beachfront restaurant from acclaimed international chef, Dimitris Katrivesis.
