February in Norway is considered the best time and place to witness the spectacular Northern Lights and, the further north travellers venture, the greater the spectacle. That is why Cruise Express has created a new and unique cruise and rail tour which will take Australians all the way to the very top of Norway in February 2019.

The new, 15-night ‘Journey to the Northern Lights’ fly, cruise and tour itinerary traces the fjord-studded coastline of Norway north above the Arctic Circle and to the most northern part of Europe, all the way to the Russian border. The tour offers Australians a rare opportunity to witness the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis as it dances across the night sky in dazzling, multi-coloured swirls.

Earlybird savings of $2000 per couple are available for bookings made by 31 January 2018.

The journey begins on 18 February 2019, when travellers fly from Australia to Norway’s capital, Oslo, for a two-night stay. Nestled between the a fjord and forested hills, Olso was recently announced as the European Green Capital for 2019.

Guests depart Oslo by train to the renowned fjord country for overnight stays in Voss and Bergen. A tour highlight is a journey on the panoramic Flam Railway, one of the world’s steepest and most picturesque train rides. Rising over 860 metres, the track traverses a winter wonderland of snowy peaks, icy waterfalls, mighty rivers and whispering pine forests. In contrast, a breathtaking cruise through two spectacular fjords – Naeroyfjord and Aurlandsfjord – provides the visitor with a perspective of this stunning region from sea level.

The tour includes a guided walking tour along the colourful harbourfront of Bergen from where the itinerary moves to sea for a six-night voyage aboard Hurtigruten’s 691-passenger ship, ms Kong Harald. Named after the current king of Norway, the ship serves as a passenger, freight, mail and car service for isolated Norwegian towns along the coast. Magnificent fjords, mighty glaciers and snow-clad mountains are just some of the picture postcard spectacles on show during the voyage. Quaint towns like Trondheim and Alesund offer a chance to experience a different way of life high above the Arctic Circle.

After rounding North Cape – the most northerly point in Europe – the voyage ends in the remote town of Kirkenes on the Russian border where guests can see reindeer, enjoy a thrilling dog sled ride and stay at the unique SnowHotel, where the rooms are carved from ice and the bedding is made from reindeer fur. The tour ends with a flight back to Oslo for a final night’s accommodation and a flight back to Australia.

Including return flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth, the 15-night ‘Journey to the Northern Lights’ package is available from $7490 per person, twin-share, if booked by 31 January 2018. This represents a saving of $1000 per person.
