Need a quick, rejuvenating escape from city life? A new destination spa and wellness retreat will open soon in the Hamptons, a two-hour drive from New York City. Shou Sugi Ban House was designed as a three-acre sanctuary with 13 guest studios surrounded by calming, Japanese-style gardens (the grounds are planted with 250 trees and an abundant variety of grasses). It’s located next to the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Parrish Art Museum in the hamlet of Water Mill in Southampton.
Shou Sugi Ban House will focus on international wellness and healing arts, offering personalised wellness journeys led by resident and visiting experts. These will combine fitness, nutrition, yoga, meditation, holistic living, hydrotherapy and body care. Guest will be able to choose between four-, five- and seven-day experiences which are all-inclusive. There will also be options for half- and full-day spa rituals for those not staying overnight.
The retreat is the brainchild of Amy Cherry-Abitbol, a former corporate attorney, and her business partner Kathleen Kapnick. Shou Sugi Ban House reflects Amy’s long-time connection to Japan and appreciation of Wabi Sabi principles. In the rooms, details like the soaking tubs and oak Kobe-style beds reflect this Japanese cultural influence.
The buildings are connected by winding pathways edged by reflecting pools, fountains, and Japanese gardens. There’s also an attention to the environment here, with solar energy, geothermal heating/cooling, and organic cotton bedding from Coyuchi. The organic vegetable and herb gardens supply the kitchens.
Facilities include a swimming pool, open-air Movement Pavilion, ceremonial fire circle and fitness centre. The Healing Arts Barn comes with a tea bar, while the Main Barn will have a demonstration kitchen. The spa has five treatment rooms along with Watsu and plunge pools, an infrared sauna, and a chromotherapy shower.
