Abercrombie & Kent Founder Geoffrey Kent has tapped into his vast global travel experience to develop two new Inspiring Expeditions through Ethiopia and Brazil.

Ethiopia by Air: Danakil & Beyond

The one-off departure in Africa explores Ethiopia’s most remote regions and “awe-inspiring natural beauty,” says Kent, with guests transported by a fleet of helicopters to locations few Westerners have travelled to before.

On Ethiopia by Air: Danakil & Beyond guests will visit the remote and rarely-visited Danakil Depression, where a glowing lava lake and sulphur-yellow salt flats are among the Earth’s most otherworldly landscapes. They will learn about the important role that Ethiopia played in human history at the National Museum with behind-the-scenes access to the original Lucy skeleton, which dates back more than 3.2 million years. Experience Christianity’s earliest sacred places with exclusive access to one of the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela when it is closed to the public. Marvel at how the story of Axum is revealed by Stelae Park’s iconic obelisks and the church believed to house the Ark of the Covenant.

Each day is filled with spectacular experiences. On a flightseeing expedition to the Danakil Depression, guests touch down for sunrise beside the sulphur springs of Dallol. Take in sweeping views of the vast salt pans and Erta Ale’s fiery volcanic crater, pausing for a swim in the emerald pools of Lake Afdera. Climb to the mountaintop churches of Gheralta Massif, all but unknown to the outside world until 1966. Guests will fly deep into the Simien Mountains to see wildlife found nowhere else, like the gelada baboon and walia ibex and meet the tribal peoples of the remote Omo Delta who rarely welcome outsiders.

Operating from 4-13 October 2019, the 10-day itinerary is capped at 14 guests and is priced at US$185,000 (approx AU$278,000) per person, double occupancy.

Carnival & Cariocas

Then, in February 2020, Kent will return to Rio de Janeiro for the annual Carnival. Guests on the Carnival & Cariocas Inspiring Expedition will experience the event on an “entirely different level,” A&K boasts.

The guests will have an all-access pass to the exclusive Copacabana Palace Magic Ball, experience a Samba school, witness the floats, dancers and pounding drum corps from a private VIP box at the Sambodromo.

Stay at the luxurious, beachfront Fasano Hotel Rio de Janeiro and hobnob with Brazil’s rich, famous and beautiful at the iconic rooftop infinity pool. Take in epic views of Christ the Redeemer with a helicopter tour over the city, landing at Urca Hill in the shadow of Sugar Loaf Mountain for a spectacular private dinner. Guests will learn the art of football as they take part in a penalty shoot-out against a professional player. Then, guests can decompress from the party vibe while cruising on a private yacht to the coastal resort of Angra dos Reis for two relaxing nights.

The 7-day Carnival & Cariocas itinerary is scheduled for 21 February 2020. Restricted to 18 passengers, the trip is priced at US$105,000 (approx AU$158,000) per person, double occupancy.

Another itinerary in the works for the Inspiring Expeditions by Geoffrey Kent range is a 12-day Emperors and the South Pole journey for up to 12 passengers, departing in December 2020.

Each of the departures must be booked via Abercrombie & Kent in the United States.
