Back-Roads Touring will introduce a new small group program to North America in 2020, with the initial season comprised of seven itineraries and going on sale from Wednesday 29 May, 2019.

It’s the first time Back-Roads Touring will offer holidays into the region and builds on the company’s core UK & Europe program developed 30+ years ago, and Asia itineraries that were introduced two years ago.

There’s a lot to be excited about at Back-Roads Touring with the imminent launch of the new North America program, for departures starting in 2020.

The North America program, initially focused wholly on the United States, explores California, the US Northeast, Southwest and Deep South. Departures will operate from April through to October.

Two departures explore the Californian coastline, including an in depth trip between Los Angeles and San Francisco. What can be driven in 5-6 hours is stretched to a five-night journey with stops in Santa Barbara, Cambria and Monterey, “really taking our time at a leisurely pace, visiting wineries, farms, sampling local produce and meeting the locals,” says Back-Roads Touring’s Queensland BDE Bridget Cowley.

The itinerary can be combined with an eight-night itinerary through Northern California, visiting Redwood National Park, Mount Shasta and Napa Valley, making a 15-day all encompassing journey.

Other options include trips through New England during autumn to view the fall foliage, focused around the “hidden gem” of Vermont, and then in summer there’s a greater focus on the New Hampshire coastline and visiting Cape Cod and eating seafood. Another trip takes Back-Roads back to its roots of battlefield tours, and explores Civil War towns and Gettysburg as well as the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.

The Stories of the Southwest explores the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, while the Heart of the Deep South ventures from New Orleans to Mississippi and touches into Tennessee.

Speaking at a preview of the program in Sydney this week, Cowley said the company’s key point of difference from rival operators was its smaller, more intimate group size (at just 18 maximum in the UK & Europe, and now in North America, and only 14 in Asia). That and Back-Roads’ ethos of venturing off the beaten path and taking the road-less-travelled.

Cowley told LATTE the USA journeys would likely be a starting point for the North America program, with Canada an almost certainty for future touring.

The entire program will go live for bookings next Wednesday, 29 May 2019.
