‘Lessons in a Life Well Lived’ series arrives at Hotel de Mar

Gastronomic and Design experience coming to Hotel Del Mar in Mallorca

Luxury Spanish hotel brand, Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts, will launch the second iteration in a series of ‘Lessons in a Life Well Lived’ initiatives designed to immerse guests in Spain’s rich heritage and culture. Following the success of its ‘Noche en Hotel Colón’, which launched in May 2019 at Hotel Colón in Seville, the prestigious hotel brand will work with leading artists across architecture, music, design and gastronomy to introduce guests to local cultural traditions. From now until 31 October at Hotel de Mar in Mallorca, chef Marga Coll of Arrels restaurant at Hotel de Mar and ceramic painter Andrea Zarraluqui will join forces to offer ‘Artesanía’ (arts and crafts), a fusion of art and local gastronomy for guests to enjoy in the form of a seven-course tasting menu.

Available weekly from Wednesday to Sunday, the second lesson in this initiative will take guests on a journey of discovery through the island of Mallorca via a range of dishes created by chef Marga Coll. Each dish will make use of fresh, locally sourced products from the market, showcasing the array and versatility of the island’s fruits, livestock and seafood. Dishes will be served on handpainted plates, each designed by artist Andrea Zarraluqui and featuring unique styles.

Chef Marga Coll says, “I am excited to be showcasing the very best of Mallorcan produce, brought to life on the most beautiful plates. Our island boasts a wealth of fruits and the freshest seafood; using locally sourced produce is at the heart of what we do, from quince paste made by my mother to local artisan cheeses. Our menus evolve every day and I look forward to educating and inspiring others about all that Mallorca has to offer through our ‘Artesanía’ series.”

The series will celebrate the island’s quality produce and culinary flair combined with the artistic skill of Andrea Zarraluqui. Hand painting in her workshop, Zarraluqui takes inspiration from her favourite, lesser-known spots in Mallorca. Her love of orange and blue hues can be seen in the porcelain and truly brings the cuisine and its bold colours to life.

“My style is free and intuitive, using colours emblematic of the isle I call home,” she said. “It is an honour to mix Mallorca and its rich gastronomy, two favourite passions of mine, and bring these together on the plate, playing with the colours of Arrels. I cannot wait for guests to experience the diversity of taste and coming together of art.”

Located on the ocean front in Illetas, Hotel de Mar is one of the most iconic destinations on the Balearic Islands and is a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World. The five-star, adults-only resort has 137 rooms and suites that offer views of the ocean. Alongside its own exclusive beach and cove surrounded by luscious landscaped gardens, the hotel offers four restaurants, two swimming pools, six conference rooms and large leisure spaces. Hotel de Mar also features an exclusive beach for guests to enjoy.

‘Artesanía’ at Hotel de Mar offers ‘Lessons in a Life Well Lived’ by drawing attention to the culture, gastronomy and signature passions of the surrounding region, launched first in Seville, followed by Mallorca and then Madrid. Gran Meliá is motivated by a respect for tradition that has in turn influenced the three unique experiences offered: ‘Noche’ in Seville, ‘Artesanía’ in Mallorca and ‘Sobremesa’ in Madrid (coming soon).

Arrels by Marga Coll restaurant at Hotel de Mar will offer this special ‘Artesanía’ experience from 20 June to 31 October 2019 for €56 per person. This price includes seven tasting dishes, subject to availability.

Throughout 2019, Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts is rapidly expanding its hotel collection with three new hotels across three different continents. Across Asia, Africa and America, Gran Meliá will continue to roll out the Spanish approach to ‘Lessons in a Life Well Lived’. The Chinese city of Chengdu will soon see the opening of Gran Meliá Chengdu, a luxury hotel where guests can enjoy the beauty of the impressive Leshan Buddha or the exquisite green tea that is born in the Himalayan foothills that surround the city. In December 2018, Gran Meliá Iguazú opened in Iguazú National Park, Argentina and became the first luxury hotel to be in front of one of the New Wonders of the World.
