Introducing the Okavango Delta’s newest luxury tented camp

African Bush Camps launches Khwai Leadwood on the edge of Botswana's Khwai River

African Bush Camps has unveiled a new camp on the edge of the Khwai River, set within Botswana’s Khwai Concession in the Okavango Delta.

The Khwai River is all that separates the Khwai Leadwood camp from the Moremi Game Reserve and is visited from time to time by hippos, elephants and lions.

The camp’s name is derived from the trees it sits beneath, and is comprised of six twin/double tents and one family unit, all positioned around a central guest area.

African Bush Camps (ABC) partnered with South African designer Fox Browne Creative on their fourth joint project to create a new luxury tented camp that captures the classic safari feel with clean lines and modern themes and finishes.

Each tent features modern amenities, private en-suite bathrooms, indoor/outdoor showers, a private timber deck and a covered verandah that displays colours and textures inspired by leadwood.

Botswana crafts are celebrated throughout the design. As an example, bedding “is the hero of the room,” notes designer Fox, with wall-mounted Botswana baskets creating a striking headboard that gives rooms warmth as well as a distinctive sense of place.

Tents are low-impact and have an extremely light footprint to align with requirements of the Botswana government.

Sustainably built, Khwai Leadwood is exceptionally environmentally friendly, with 90% of its energy drawn from a full solar farm, and energy-efficient appliances and light fittings used throughout. Tents are made of tensile fabric and set on plinths to reduce their foundations and enable their placement in intimate settings without disturbing roots or removing trees.

During the day, guests can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, helicopter flights and mokoro safaris (water levels permitting) on the search for Africa’s big attractions including lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe. An additional virtue of this area is that guests can head off on night drives and get an up-close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and more elusive animals.

Khwai Leadwood camp is ABC’s 16th luxury location, joining its stable of camps and lodges in Zimbabwe (9), Zambia (1) and five other sites in Botswana.

Rates start at Khwai Leadwood start at $609 per person per night. Guests staying for at least three nights between April and November are offered a complimentary 30-minute helicopter flight over the Delta.
