A brand new luxury hotel in Tasmania and a fully overhauled five-star lodge in Queensland’s Daintree were identified in Travel + Leisure‘s (T+L’s) ‘It List’ of the best luxury hotels for 2022.
Travel + Leisure pinpointed 100 of the “most unforgettable new and reimagined properties” in 35 countries around the world in its 17th annual chart, which included The Tasman, Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart and Baillie Lodges’ Silky Oaks Lodge.
The Tasman and Silky Oaks Lodge were on level pegging with the likes of Airelles Le Grand Controle – France; Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid; and The Woodward, Geneva.

Jacqui Gifford, Editor in Chief of Travel + Leisure, said, “The hotels on this year’s It List represent 100 reasons to travel now, from luxury escapes in urban destinations to affordable beachside getaways. We know that the world has changed immeasurably in the past few years, presenting unprecedented challenges to the industry—which makes inclusion on this particular list all the more extraordinary. Congratulations to the 2022 It List hotels!”
Stephen Morahan, General Manager at The Tasman, said: “The opening of The Tasman has signified the importance of Tasmania as a global destination for luxury travellers and we are thrilled to have been recognised on a global level by Travel + Leisure.”
“The Luxury Collection offers a gateway to the world’s most exciting and desirable destinations, so it has been wonderful to introduce the brand to Australia and put the rest of the world on notice to the charms of Hobart,” Morahan added.

Renowned as Tropical North Queensland’s luxury bolthole for more than three decades, the new-look Silky Oaks Lodge reopened in December 2021 following a $20 million refurbishment undertaken by new owners.
Sonya Boaden, Silky Oaks Lodge Manager, said: “The recognition for Silky Oaks Lodge in the Travel + Leisure 2022 list among the world’s best new hotels is a great testament to the whole team which works hard every day to deliver an unforgettable experience for our guests,” she said.
Last year, only one property in Australia made the grade – the then brand new six-star Crown Towers Sydney.
The 2022 It List also features 41 hotels in North America, 34 in Europe, 9 in the Caribbean and Central and South America, 8 in Africa and the Middle East, and 6 in Asia.
