Scenic will offer guests aboard Scenic Eclipse the chance to access Snow Hill Island as part of a one-off voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula in 2022.
For the first time, guests on the ‘Discovery Yacht’ have the opportunity to embark on a helicopter excursion to witness 5,000 breeding pairs of Emperor penguins on the island.
A colony that was only discovered in the 90s and situated on the brink of the Antarctic Circle, Snow Hill Island is only accessible by helicopter. Scenic Eclipse is one of the only cruise lines able to facilitate this rare once-in-a-lifetime moment for guests.
Featuring soaring icebergs formations and impenetrable walls of Weddell Sea ice, this remote location is often only visited by scientists. From December 2022, subject to weather and operational conditions, selected guests onboard Scenic Eclipse’s 16-day Antarctica & The Weddell Sea voyage will have the chance to be among the few to experience the excursion. Designed by experts in polar expeditions, this brand-new experience gives guests the rare opportunity to witness these magnificent penguins in their natural habitat.
The new excursion is timed to coincide with the end of the breeding season, marking it the perfect time to spot chicks as they shed fluffy grey feathers and prepare for their first forays into the Antarctic Ocean.
On Weddell Sea voyages, guests can also see rookeries of elephant seals lazing on the beach, or pods of humpback whales, minke and orcas breaching the surface of the water all while enjoying the views of snowcapped mountains and twinkling glaciers in the final continental frontier in all-inclusive, ultra-luxury style.
With Scenic Eclipse’s dynamic positioning system, an on board fleet of Zodiacs providing multiple daily shore landings, two luxury helicopters, a six-person submarine and expert guides, guests can observe these endangered species, while also complying with the IAATO Snow Hill Emperor Penguin Colony Guidelines.
Guests can join the 16-day Antarctica & The Weddell Sea voyage, flying to Buenos Aires and sailing a round trip from Ushuaia. Super Earlybird prices start from AU$23,495*per person inclusive of AU$5,040*per person saving. Pricing is based on the 20 December 2022 departure in a Grand Deluxe Suite.
The exclusive Snow Hill Island helicopter excursion can be booked on arrival for an additional US$1,725 per person. There are limited guest places and the excursion is subject to operational, weather and operating restrictions. Submarine dives are also additional.
“Scenic Eclipse has a Polar Class 6 rating and is custom-built for Antarctic exploration, allowing us to go far deeper into the Weddell’s ice than most cruise lines,” said Jason Flesher, Expedition Operations Director, Scenic Discovery Yachts.
“The ship’s technology enables us to take our guests to the most hidden corners of Antarctica and offer them once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
This new experience is in addition to the recently added submarine dives in South Georgia Islands, which enable guests to witness a diversity of rich marine life unlike anywhere else in the world.
All new 2022 bookings are covered by Scenic’s Flexible Booking Policy, enabling guests to defer their cruise to another travel date or itinerary up to 60 days prior to departure and come with Scenic’s Deposit Protection Plan included.
