Forbes Travel Guide unveils 2022 Star Awards

Australia represented with a dozen properties, including three Five Star honourees

Forbes Travel Guide (FTG) has this week revealed its annual Star Awards for Hotels, Restaurants and Spas globally, with 2022 featuring 323 Five-Star hotels – up 40 properties from the year prior.

Australia is represented in the 2022 Star Awards with a dozen properties in what is a carbon-copy of the 2021 result. The Aussie FTG contingent is centred around three cities – Sydney, Melbourne and Perth – with only three of the 12 verified by Forbes as “Five-Star”. Those properties were Crown Towers Melbourne, Crown Towers Perth and The Darling (in Sydney).

Sydney had the highest quota of hotels represented in the guide in Australia with five other listings: The Langham Sydney and Park Hyatt Sydney were both Four-Star; while InterContinental Sydney, Shangri-La Hotel Sydney and Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour were Recommended.

In Melbourne, Park Hyatt Melbourne was rated Four-Star and Grand Hyatt Melbourne and The Langham Melbourne were both Recommended, while in Perth COMO The Treasury was also listed as Four-Star.

The only major difference between the 2021 and 2022 lists was mention of Crown Towers Sydney being a “soon to be rated” property.

In New Zealand, five properties made Forbes Travel Guides’ listings for 2022, including The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, Huka Lodge and The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs – all Four-Star. Cordis Auckland and Delamore Lodge, Waiheke Island were Recommended.

Dolphin Island in Fiji was the only Five-Star hotel in Fiji, while Nanuku Auberge Resorts Collection was deemed Four-Star. Kokomo Private Island Fiji and Six Sense Fiji were Recommended.

This year’s number of Five-Star hotels increased through the expansion into new markets, including the Canary Islands, Ibiza and Malta.

Nine destinations welcomed their inaugural Five-Star hotel: Amman (Four Seasons Hotel Amman); Amsterdam (Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam); Berlin (Hotel de Rome, a Rocco Forte Hotel); Greece (Katikies Mykonos); Ibiza (BLESS Hotel); Madrid (Four Seasons Hotel Madrid and BLESS Hotel Madrid); Malta (Iniala Harbour House); Okinawa, Japan (Halekulani Okinawa); and Zurich (The Dolder Grand).

London claimed the title of the city with the most Five-Star hotels worldwide. The British capital tallied 21 top-rated hotels, including the new additions of Pan Pacific London and The Prince Akatoki London. The UK capital was followed Macau (17 listings), Paris (13), New York (11) and Tokyo (9).

The Maldives picked up four new Five-Star hotels: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, JOALI Maldives, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island and Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi.

Boutique hotels made a strong showing. The standouts delivering one-of-a-kind experiences include new Five-Star properties such as Casa Angelina (Amalfi Coast); The Chanler at Cliff Walk (Newport, Rhode Island); Chatham Inn (Cape Cod); ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki; The Hazelton Hotel in Toronto; Hotel Esencia (Tulum); Iniala Harbour House & Residences (Malta); JOALI Maldives; Katikies Mykonos; Kudadoo Maldives Private Island; and Park Hotel Vitznau (Switzerland).

Auberge Resorts Collection welcomed three new Five-Star hotels: The Lodge at Blue Sky (Park City, Utah); Madeline Hotel and Residences (Telluride, Colorado); and White Barn Inn (Kennebunk, Maine).

There were 295 Spas that made the 2022 Forbes Travel Guide list, 109 of which were Five-Star. Australia had just three, all of which were the spas of the country’s three Five-Star hotels, namely Crown Spa Melbourne, Crown Spa Perth and The Darling Spa (and all rated as Four-Star).

Macau had the highest number of Five-Star spas with 14, followed by Hong Kong, Las Vegas and Los Cabos – all with five. The Bulgari Spa Dubai and The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Doha were the Middle East’s first Five-Star spas.
