Cultural tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels is celebrating a twenty-year milestone of operations in 2022, proving that in the context of history, the pandemic has caused merely a pause in travellers’ desire to discover the world’s ancient living cultures.
As the world begins to travel again, the award-winning tour operator has reinstated its range of European and Middle Eastern Tours and added two new tours to the extensive range of itineraries available to guests in 2022 and 2023.

The Walking and Cruising the Carian Coast tour will run over seven days, 2-9 October 2022, taking in the beautiful and undiscovered coast with walks along the Carian Trail, one of Turkey’s most spectacular trails. With its herb-lined paths, atmospheric ruins and hills swathed in pine and olive, this epic hiking route stretching more than 800 kilometres, offers a real sense of the remote, undiscovered Turkey. Guests join a gulet to explore the region’s hidden bays and archaeological wonders.
Rates start at £2,550 per person (approximately AU$4,425).
Another new tour offered in June, and which will be offered again next year, is the twelve-day Exploring Macedonia tour over the dates 12-24 June 2023. The tour of Greece’s historic Macedonia features accommodation in boutique hotels and traces the footsteps of Alexander the Great across rugged mountains and fertile lowlands to the coastline and the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea. This tour is ideal either for the first-time visitor to Macedonia, or as a deepening of the experience for return visitors.
Rates start at £4,550 per person (approximately AU$7,895).
The two new tours complement 29 existing tours that have been developed over two decades operating history and serve to demonstrate the resilience of premium tour operators as well as the demand of the discerning traveller. This year’s anniversary is a chance for founder and tour leader Peter Sommer to reflect on humble beginnings and the growth of the offering – and a growing, dedicated following of travellers.
“When we first started in 2002, I was the sole tour leader and the business offered just one tour, Cruising the Lycian Shore which is now considered a classic and continues to run today,” Sommer said.
“A decade later Peter Sommer Travels was operating nine itineraries across Greece, Italy and Turkey, with a team of three expert tour leaders: myself, Dr Michael Metcalfe and Heinrich Hall, who together offered a fascinating experience of the food, wine, people and cultural heritage of Europe and the Middle East,” he said.
