Aurora Expeditions names Special Guests line-up

Acclaimed marine biologist, author, presenter, sailor alongside Dr Sylvia Earle in 2022/23

Aurora Expeditions has named its upcoming program of Special Guests who will be joining a variety of voyages for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023.

The program aims to match inspiring and educational guests from around the world with voyages where they can share their expertise and personal insights into the incredible and remote destinations
that Aurora visits.

Michael Heath, CEO of Aurora Expeditions, said “Education and enrichment are at the heart of the way we explore, and we are thrilled to share our Special Guests program featuring experts in the fields of exploration, conservation, science, photography, art, culture and more to enrich our expeditions with their unique perspectives, insights and experiences.”

Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki is an Australian author, science communicator and media commentator whose career has spanned radio, TV, books, newspapers, magazines, podcasts and more. Dr. Karl’s infectious enthusiasm for science will be shared with Aurora’s passengers via a series of talks including lectures on climate change, space exploration, travel and more.

Richard Morecroft is a presenter and interviewer, narrator, speaker and author, best known for his two decades as the 7pm news presenter for ABC Television. He has always had a strong interest in wildlife
and the environment and has been a longtime trustee of the WWF, is a patron of WIRES, a Governor of the Taronga Foundation and one of the Directors of the Zoological Parks Board of NSW. Moorecroft will be delivering talks on a range of subjects, including landscapes, wildlife and art, as well as interactive and participative talks involving members of Aurora’s Expedition Team.

Lisa Blair is the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica with one-stop, and in 2017 led the first all-female team in 16 years to race in the Rolex 2017 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on board her yacht Climate Action Now. Later that year, she became the first woman to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Australia. Blair has now sailed over 70,000nm and is now working on her first book, Demasted, which is to be published by Australian Geographic. Lisa will be sharing a number of talks inspired by her travels and experiences.

Dr Paul Willis is the former Director of the Royal Institution of Australia, presenter on ABC TV’s Catalyst program, paleontologist and career science communicator. Willishas been on 11 expeditions to Antarctica with Aurora where he specialises in interpreting the palaeontological treasures to be found on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Lucas Handley (supplied)

Lucas Handley is a marine biologist, underwater photographer, and Master Freedive Instructor. He has appeared as a host on the Discovery Channel and contributed to internationally acclaimed film, ‘BLUE’. Handley is passionate about ecologically sustainable development, saving our oceans and sustainable underwater tourism. He regularly runs ‘re-wilding’ experiences; taking groups of people back into the remote corners of the watery globe to learn how to freedive, spearfish and live off the land. Amongst delivering talks, Handley will be freediving in Antarctica with some of Aurora’s passengers.

Dr. Sylvia Earle is the namesake of Aurora’s second purpose-built vessel – an oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer with an insatiable passion for underwater exploration and marine conservation.
Referred to as Her Deepness, Dr Earle is the recipient of more than 100 national and international honours and awards including being named Time Magazine’s first Hero of the Planet. She was also the first woman to become chief scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is currently President and Chairperson of Mission Blue and the Sylvia Earle Alliance.
