Scenic has revealed NASA Scientist Dr Kathy Sullivan as the Godmother of its second Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse II. Set to be christened in Malaga, Spain on 3 June 2023, Scenic says the American geologist and oceanographer is the perfect person to take on the illustrious role of Godmother.
Dr Sullivan has travelled into space three times as one of NASA’s first female astronauts and was the first American woman to complete a spacewalk. Along with these incredible achievements, Dr Sullivan is also the first woman to explore Challenger Deep, the deepest part of Earth’s oceans, earning her the title of the ‘World’s Most Vertical Person’.
“We are immensely proud that Dr. Kathy Sullivan will be the Godmother for Scenic Eclipse II. She truly is the living embodiment of what our Discovery Yachts stand for – innovation, pushing the boundaries, discovery, revelling in a sense of adventure and being a true pioneer in her field,” said Anthony Laver, Scenic Group General Manager of Sales and Marketing APAC.
“Throughout her career, Dr. Sullivan has grasped life’s opportunities and committed to advancing our knowledge of the world around us. We believe the guests who travel aboard the two Scenic Eclipse ultra-luxury Discovery Yachts, will share that same passion and curiosity to explore and learn,” he said.
Dr Sullivan is recognised as one of the world’s foremost scientists and has a distinguished career of research and exploration. Highlights include being a crew member on three Space Shuttle missions, being the first American woman to walk in space for NASA and helping to launch the Hubble space telescope.
She is a NASA Chief Scientist, leading the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the first woman to dive to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Earth’s oceans. She also holds three Guinness World Records based on her ground-breaking explorations.
“It’s a high honour to be a ship’s Godmother,” said Dr. Sullivan. “I’m especially delighted to be Godmother to a vessel as well-designed for exploration and discovery as Scenic Eclipse II,” she said.
Scenic Eclipse II will join the Discovery Yacht fleet in mid-April 2023, with the naming ceremony taking place in June 2023 following a series of immersive sailings, exploring the charming ports and villages of the Mediterranean, that larger ships cannot access. Scenic Eclipse II will then head north to explore the Arctic including Greenland, Svalbard and Iceland for a season.
Like its sister ship, Scenic Eclipse (launched in 2019), Scenic Eclipse II will set the benchmark in ultra-luxury ocean cruising. The 550-ft, 228-guest discovery yacht is small enough to access ports and coves otherwise inaccessible to traditional cruise ships and boasts its own helicopters and submarine to offer guests unrivalled access to nature during voyages.
