White Desert has this month opened its latest project in Antarctica, the luxurious and space-inspired Echo Base.

Taking advantage of 24 hours of daylight on the Southern Continent, the remotely located Echo Base is open for a short window of mid-November to late-January only and limited to no more than 12 guests at one time.

Comprised of six standalone dome ‘Sky Pods’ and a central hub, Echo Base is the Virtuoso Preferred operator’s third project on the White Continent. Echo Base is a sister property to the luxury tented White Desert’s transit camp, Wolf’s Fang, which has an old explorer’s vibe, and Whichaway, until now the flagship camp that also features a half-dozen ‘Polar Pods’.

Echo Base has a space-age design that makes them look like they’ve been beamed down from Mars, the company says.

“Futuristic and luxurious, the six bedrooms are created from composite fibreglass with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing guests to soak in the moon-like landscape beyond.”

Given its space-like feel, Patrick Woodhead, CEO of White Desert told LATTE earlier this year at Virtuoso Travel Week that the new camp’s name was derived from Star Wars – a nod to the facility established by the Rebel Alliance in the second episode. The Sky Pods themselves even share an uncanny resemblance to the Millennium Falcon spacecraft from the cult classic.

The central hub, known as ‘Cosmos’, is formed of four separate rooms all connected by tunnels that resemble a docking station to a spaceship. Inside, the ‘sky pods’ are no less futuristic, with vast windows that bring the landscape of Antarctica inside each lounge, bar or dining space.

“Padded walls encircle a delicate Art Deco bar, while an Anthony James art sculpture glows like a giant power source at one end,” Woodhead said in an update via email this week. “Walking through the tunnel I discover a library and daybed with someone napping under a cashmere blanket.”

Adventurous guests of Echo Base have a range of activities they can participate in while on site, including fatbiking, skiing, abseiling, ice climbing, a skidoo tour, an arctic safari truck tour, and visiting the nearby colony of 28,000 Emperor Penguins, or a bucket-list journey to the South Pole.

Echo Base has been three years in planning and represents a “totally new forward-looking vision of tourism in Antarctica,” Woodhead said having opened the project’s door on 8 December.

The 7-day South Pole and Emperors itinerary operating roundtrip from Cape Town, South Africa – and utilising Echo Base – is priced from US$104,000 per person. There is currently limited availability for dates in the second half of January 2023. Dates are already open and selling for the late 2023/early 2024 season.

White Desert also partners with Wilderness (formerly known as Wilderness Safaris) to offer a combination of African safari adventures with Antarctic expeditions.
