Albatros Expeditions has appointed Captain Michael Elwert as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Elwert was confirmed to the top role this week, but it’s understood he has been with the polar expedition specialist for the past six months.
Elwert takes over the role from Albatros Expeditions’ owner Søren Rasmussen, who has occupied the post since the departure of Hans Lagerweij 12 months ago. Lagerweij stood down from the role to ultimately join Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts as Senior Vice President, Yachts.
Elwert is a deep sea captain and has a long career in the shipping industry under his belt.

Greg Carter, Chief Commercial Officer of Albatros Expeditions said Elwert will “take the helm for this exciting period in our history, as well as look after Søren’s other shipping interests.”
Speaking on his appointment, Elwert said “I am genuinely excited and humbled to have joined AE as President & CEO. I am equally proud to be part of such a passionate, capable, and global Albatros team that is highly committed to Polar expedition excellence!”
“I have been very fortunate to learn the ropes and cover all aspects and functions of running a global, first-class, and customer-centric ship-owning and managing business.”
Having worked in 11 countries spanning the US, Europe and Asia throughout his career, Elwert considers himself “a truly global citizen”.

“We have a great product backed by our unique polar travel experience, which will be further complemented with yet another new build next-generation exploration vessel joining our fleet later this year.
“The Albatros Expeditions team diversity is undoubtedly a strength and competitive edge; together with the entire team, I look forward to unleashing our full potential!”
Albatros Expeditions currently operates one vessel, Ocean Victory, and is awaiting the arrival of a sister ship, Ocean Albatros, expected to enter service in May.
