Brand new for 2023, the Jockey Jones Suite is a jaunty, sophisticated sanctuary honouring one of Otahuna’s most beloved personalities.
Otahuna Lodge is a beguiling Victorian mansion that offers its guests a unique sense of wonder. New Zealand’s largest private historic residence has been revitalised with luxury accommodations, luscious gardens, and sophisticated cuisine set in pastoral surroundings by an ancient volcano. With charming grounds, and refined personable service, Otahuna Lodge combines the romance of the past with the cosmopolitan pleasures of the present. And now boasts a new addition of the Jockey Jones Suite honouring one of Otahuna’s most beloved personalities.
John Jones arrived from Scotland in 1890 to work in the Governor-General’s household in Wellington. His small stature and expertise as a polo groom quickly earned him the nickname “Jockey”. Heaton Rhodes convinced him to leave Government House and join the ranks at a magnificent new estate constructed outside of Christchurch. Jockey would become a fixture of Otahuna’s life for over 60 years as Heaton’s polo groom, batman and chauffeur. Jockey was Heaton’s most trusted and loyal confidante, and in time, he would marry and raise his own family in a house still visible today from the Lodge’s Potager Garden.
The Jockey Jones Suite represents the culmination of the Otahuna Lodge interior aesthetic. This collection of rooms overlooks the Herb Garden, the Wine Cellar’s terracotta roof, and the woodland beyond. Inside, a bedroom clad in a chic 18th-century Pierre Frey wallcovering, a spacious sitting room with a sofa that can accommodate an extra guest, a striking collection of modern art by two emerging New Zealand artists and the ultimate indulgence: two separate bathrooms.
