Captain’s Choice announces rail and walking journeys for 2024

Spanning from the enchanting grounds of Portugal to the breathtaking alpine panoramas of Switzerland and Italy, and the wilds of Africa, Captain’s Choice 2024 portfolio highlights three slow expeditions, each providing an immersive exploration across some of the world’s most stunning destinations.

Highlights include:

  • Exploring unique African wildlife within Namibia’s unique Etosha National Park, flying over the Namib Desert, the world’s oldest desert and enjoying the opulence of the Pride of Africa train across a 16-day journey.
  • Journeying on an enchanting steam train journey past crystalline lakes, lakeside chalets, verdant pine forests and alpine landscapes of Switzerland and Italy on an intimate 19-day journey.
  • Uncover the rich history of Portugal, take in its beautiful coastlines, and walk across the iconic Luis I Bridge on a cultural nineteen-day walking journey covering 261km stretch of scenic land.

Namibia Etosha National Park

An Immersive Odyssey of South-Western Africa

Reserved for only 40 guests, travellers will be captivated by the untamed beauty of southwestern Africa with Captain’s Choice Namibia and South Africa by Private Plane and Rovos Rail journey. This 16-day adventure combines the luxuries of private air travel, the opulent Pride of Africa train, and remarkable wildlife encounters.

Following a first night in Johannesburg, explorers head on a journey northward to Ondangwa, flying on board a chartered jet. Here, two full days of exhilarating game drives await, offering guests the chance to observe giraffes, zebras and oryx in their natural habitat within the enchanting grounds of Etosha National Park. At their next destination, the journey’s crown jewel emerges, the Pride of Africa train. Over the course of ten days, this remarkable rail voyage reveals the mesmerising landscapes of Namibia and South Africa accompanied by local guides and an expert Captain’s Choice Tour Manager. During the expedition, travellers will indulge in world-class cuisine within their elegant dining cars and retreat to the comfort of their appointed luxury compartments following each day’s activities. An unforgettable canvas of European charm

The Alpine Ascent of Switzerland and Italy is a nineteen-day journey that invites 22 guests to take in the splendour of Europe’s celebrated railways, offering an opportunity to embrace the charming lakeside chalets and verdant pine forests.

Kicking off in Zurich, Switzerland, guests begin their journey by venturing to the captivating city of Lucerne, indulging in four days of scenic marvels. Next, they step aboard the Luzern-Interlaken Express train, where they will be greeted by crystalline lakes and alpine landscapes on their journey through Interlaken, with the opportunity to partake in experiences from an enchanting steam train journey to the peak of Mt Rothorn. From here, they board the iconic GoldenPass Express for a panoramic journey to Montreux where they will be greeted by the shores of Lake Geneva before embarking on a journey through Zermatt and St Moritz on the world’s slowest express train.

At nearby Pontresina, guests board the Bernina Express and embark on a short journey across the border into Italy before taking a luxury coach to Bellagio. Boasting some of the most beautiful lakeside scenery in the world, guests can absorb the colourful villages and Italian hillside panorama during their two-night stay. During the final leg of the journey, travellers venture across the crystal waters of Lake Como and head north to Val Bavona before returning to Zurich.

A scenic journey through Portuguese splendour

The Portuguese Coastal Camino & Douro Valley is a nineteen-day journey thoughtfully crafted for a select group of 18 guests. Accompanied by a Captain’s Choice Tour Manager, Tour Doctor and two local expert guides, this itinerary promises a blend of scenic exploration and cultural immersion across 12 days of walking covering 261km.

Starting in Lisbon, guests will uncover the city’s rich history and exploration heritage including the city’s leading role in world exploration during the Age of Discoveries. As the journey unfolds, travellers will depart Lisbon and venture inland through the rural idyll surroundings of Tomar. As evening falls, they will be picked up from Tomar to embark on a twilight tour of Coimbra, the medieval university town, which offers insight into Portuguese royalty.

Settling in Porto, travellers can expect to be enchanted by the city’s port wine heritage and historic architecture. Arriving in Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest wine regions, guests will uncover one of the highlights of the trip, walking across the iconic Luis I Bridge before enjoying a leisurely lunch in a local winery. Setting off for the coast, a Camino experience awaits, introducing Portugal’s beautiful coastlines, offering scenic walks and idyllic views across 12 days. The journey then concludes in Santiago de Compostela, where travellers will earn their Compostela certificate, a testament to their excursion.
