Baillie Lodges is expecting a solid summer of bookings for the freshly minted second iteration of Southern Ocean Lodge, with bumper volumes flowing well into autumn for the ultra-luxury property. Demand is strong from domestic, international, the trade and corporate as the lodge re-establishes itself as one of Australia’s most highly sought bucket list destinations.

“We’re both excited and feeling quite sentimental to be bringing our flagship Southern Ocean Lodge back to its home on the wild cliffs of Kangaroo Island,” Co-Founders James and Hayley Baillie told LATTE a week after the property’s reopening on 6 December.

“It’s a full circle moment as we created Southern Ocean Lodge from the ground up and opened her doors in 2008,” they said of the highly-anticipated relaunch. “After the fires we committed to the rebuild, and four years later, here we are!”

Southern Ocean Lodge was one of the founding members of the Luxury Lodges of Australia collection. The property’s rebirth is a major boost for LLOA. “We value being part of such a tight night community of like-minded, complementary operators,” the Baillies said of Luxury Lodges of Australia.

“We have a very busy summer lined up which extends to autumn which is a lovely time to visit KI. Our favourite season is winter when you can enjoy the open fire and a glass of fine South Australian red while the Southern Ocean provides the theatre outside.”

Currently, the resort is welcoming many past guests and domestic visitors. Further into summer, there’s an increase in international itineraries coming back online, “which is great,” the Baillies said. The US has historically been Southern Ocean Lodges’ strongest overseas market, followed by the UK/Europe audience. Southeast Asia is also an emerging market for the lodge.

The duo were full of praise for the travel trade, saying they are “very grateful for the support from trade partners. Many have been confirming bookings since May this year and running waitlists prior to that!”

After the pandemic, there’s been “a real upswing in interest” for group buyouts. “We have quite a few enquiries already in the pipeline for both corporate events and special birthday celebrations.”

Meanwhile, Southern Ocean Lodges’ reopening has seen the nocturnal tour join the lodge’s stable of Signature Experiences, available for groups of 1-6 people. That portfolio also includes the Wonders of Kangaroo Island, Seal Bay, Southern Sundowners and the Coastal Clifftop Walk.

The Baillies recommend a minimum three-night stay for guests staying at Southern Ocean Lodge.
