Italian firm Arsenale Group has signed a rail partnership in Uzbekistan that will see the development of a new luxury tourist rail journey in that country dubbed ‘The Samarkand Express’.

The project is a cooperative agreement between Arsenale Group and O’zbekiston Temir Yo’llari JSC (Uzbekistan Railways), and involves the construction of a train to operate between the modern city of Tashkent and three ancient cities including Khiva (the destination) over an estimated three days.

The Samarkand Express offers a maximum of 76 passengers unparalleled comfort and an unforgettable travel experience, the new partners say, with expected daytime stops in Samarkand and Bukhara.

The luxury train will comprise 13-15 carriages with 38 deluxe and super deluxe compartments. Passengers can enjoy spacious and elegant cabins, gourmet meals, first-class service and panoramic windows offering breathtaking views of Uzbekistan’s beautiful landscapes.

There will be 70 to 90 journeys aboard the train annually when it enters operation in 2026.

The government of Uzbekistan is backing the new rail service which it believes will offer greater potential for tourism development in the Central Asian country.

The train will not only be a means of transport but a cultural exchange platform that will allow passengers to broaden their knowledge on the history, traditions and lifestyle of ancient and modern Uzbekistan.

Deal done. Khikmatulla Rakhmetov, Vice Chairman of the Board, Uzbek Railway and Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale S.p.A.

Construction of the trains has been handed to the Uzbekistan Railways.

Arsenale Group’s other rail projects include the La Dolce Vita Orient Express in Italy which went on sale to the public last month for departures in 2025 (featured only in LATTE), while the lesser known Dream of the Desert‘ Etihad Rail project is equally resplendent, and is earmarked to commence operation in Saudi Arabia in 2025.
