Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has continued its success story in the expedition sector. After HANSEATIC spirit (2023), HANSEATIC inspiration also sailed the Amazon for the first time in March and April, all the way to Iquitos/Peru. No other international provider currently manages this route, the company says.

Guests of HANSEATIC inspiration look back on two unforgettable adventures in the exclusive circle of explorers: The small and maneuverable expedition ship from the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet recently completed its first Amazon season. HANSEATIC inspiration moved up and down the river through the largest contiguous tropical forest on earth – in the footsteps of the sister ship HANSEATIC spirit, which celebrated its Amazon premiere last year.

Thanks to the great experience of everyone involved as well as the manageable size of the ship and the shallow draft of the identical new expedition buildings, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is currently the only international provider whose expedition ships sail the Amazon all the way to Iquitos/Peru. Other market participants turn back in Manaus, Brazil. Pevas, one of the oldest Peruvian settlements, and the markets of Leticia, Colombia make this region particularly attractive. There are always opportunities for authentic encounters with foreign traditions and rituals, but above all also for observing nature under the trained guidance of the experienced expedition team on board and the local experts.

The passage on the “Rio Mar” (i.e. “Sea River”), as the locals call it, requires experience and the full skill of the crew. Again and again, challenging changes of direction along the narrow course of the river have to be mastered confidently. This spectacle is also watched with interest by the locals, the ‘Caboclos’, who cross the path of the expedition ship in their boats. Occasionally they also moor at the marina at the stern and offer regional goods.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises draws on more than 20 years of experience for its Amazon expedition trips, as the cruise operator also undertook these trips with the previous ships, the former BREMEN and the HANSEATIC. They are still considered highlights in the calendar because only a few trips are offered each year, up and down the river.

Isolde Susset, Head of Expedition Cruises and Tourism at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, emphasises: “The Amazon expeditions are extremely popular with our guests and traditionally book up very quickly. Next year our HANSEATIC nature will be driving these routes for the first time. Now you have to be quick. There are currently only a few free cabins left.”

The route promises incomparable insights into exotic flora and fauna during the day and at night. Under the expert guidance of German-speaking experts, including ethnologists, biologists and botanists, guests experience the diversity of this unique and sensitive ecosystem up close. You explore the tributaries using the Zodiac and learn about the tensions between pristine nature and global economic interests.
