Occupancy at InterContinental Hayman better than expected

Ultra-luxe island resort sees rise in last-minute bookings after its C19 closure

One of Australia’s premier ultra-luxury island resorts, InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, has welcomed a higher than expected visitation since emerging from a coronavirus closure at the start of September.

The IHG property was one of multiple resorts in the Whitsundays that was forced to shutter its operation in late March after the Australian Government restricted non-essential travel as the coronavirus pandemic started to take hold across parts of the country. Nearby qualia on Hamilton Island, Daydream Island Resort and Orpheus Island Lodge also closed their doors.

InterContinental Hayman Island Resort was out of action for nearly six months, reopening on 1 September 2020.

General Manager, Arpad Romandy, told LATTE this week the luxe-resort was “incredibly grateful” to report that demand and occupancy levels at InterContinental Hayman have been “much stronger than anticipated”.

“Interestingly, we’re seeing a shift towards a lot of last-minute bookings, with particular demand in the higher end room categories such as our suites,” Arpad said.

“The support from the local Queensland community has been tremendous; this is the majority of the bookings right now. With the resorts on our neighbouring Whitsunday Islands now reopening, we are starting to see additional demand to the mainland also,” he told LATTE.

“While it’s going to be a steep road ahead and quite sometime before we’re seeing the results we had in 2019, it’s great to be open and creating jobs in an industry that has been so severely impacted.

Arpad added that it had been awesome to see “so many hospitality professionals jump at the opportunity to get back to work and get back to doing what we love”.
