Some of Southeast Asia’s most remote and ecologically rich destinations will be explored on a new 14-day expedition from small ship cruise line Heritage Expeditions, entitled Indonesia’s Forgotten Islands. The itinerary will depart Darwin on 8 September 2026 and sail to Singapore, taking travellers off the beaten path along the way, according to Heritage Expeditions’ Commercial Director and Expedition Leader Aaron Russ.“This really is an authentic expedition experience, we’ll be sailing well-off traditional tourist routes to experience some of Southeast Asia’s most captivating and rarely-seen wonders,” he said.

Guests will have the chance to walk alongside the legendary Komodo Dragons, snorkel the vibrant coral reefs of the world-renowned Pink Beach and visit Camp Leakey – a globally recognised research facility at the forefront of Orangutan rehabilitation.Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting rare and elusive species while exploring lush jungles, including Proboscis Monkeys, Tarsiers, elusive Clouded Leopards and Sun Bears, East Javan Langur and Giant Squirrel. Among the hundreds of species of birdlife that call these islands home is the recently rediscovered Wetar Ground Dove, considered one of the world’s most elusive birds.Cultural experiences also feature prominently. Travellers will meet the Lamalerans, one of Indonesia’s last subsistence whaling communities on Lembata Island, and witness the ancient spectacle of Water Buffalo racing on Sumbawa Island – a tradition rarely seen by outsiders. The voyage also includes visits to Kelimutu National Park, famous for its three differently coloured volcanic crater lakes, and to Satonda Island, home to lush jungle and a hidden crater lake — described as “one of Indonesia’s most underrated and least-visited treasures.”“There really is something for everyone on this voyage,” Russ said, “and we can’t wait to share this special part of the world with our guests on this incredible adventure.”A 20% discount is available for bookings made before 31 October 2025.
